I was listening to the old hymn “Trust and Obey”, and it reminded me that no matter what is going on in life, I need to continue to trust and obey God. As a Follower of Christ, that is one of the most basic elements of following him through this life.

Trust God…trust he keeps his promises, trust he knows what he is doing in my life even if I don’t understand it, trust he is sovereign over everything going on in this world, and trust that he will guide my steps through the journey of this life no matter how difficult or messy it gets. I must continue to just seek to trust God.

Obey God…obey what he says in his word, obey him even when it’s difficult or life seems to be coming against me, obey him because he is the sovereign Lord of all, and obey him by being willing to go where he leads and do what he guides me to do. I must continue to seek to obey God.

Both such basic elements of being a Follower of Christ. Both essential to being able to effectively follow and live for God. Both areas of life that Satan will seek to attack, in order to keep us from living for God as we should.

May we keep our eyes on God as we journey through this life, remembering to always trust him and obey him. May we never forget to focus on those fundamental elements of living for God in this life, no matter what life brings our way.

Trust and Obey

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way;
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.
