I recently had a conversation with someone about downloading music from the internet for free. I said that since it’s illegal, it shouldn’t be done. The response I got was quite interesting…and all too common when it comes to how we live our lives. The reply was that “it is free and benefits me, so I don’t really care”.
Our society’s morals and values are screwed up if we think and believe that what is right and wrong has become dependant on whether or not we get something out of it…and unfortunately many Christians have adopted that same way of thinking. I’ve often heard people say things like “as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody” or “it’s not a big deal, everyone does it” when they rationalize doing something they know is wrong simply because it gets them something they want.
Yet if it is illegal then it is wrong, even if it gets us what we want and we don’t get caught or in trouble. Wrong is always wrong, no matter the outcome. Sin is sin, wrong is wrong, truth is truth.
As Followers of Christ, we need to make sure we are living according to the truth of scripture and not according to the “truth” of this world. God calls us to be holy as he is holy, which means that even in the little things we must choose to do what is right.
